Here are the latest updates...
Wolfrantic is a garage rock Halloween riff with a primal beat. Listen via the master playlist file or the Soundcloud feed. This song is inspired by full moons and lycanthropy. Enjoy!
A Million From A Thousand is a mix of Japanese koto and sci-fi radio drama and includes a recognizable riff from vintage Star Trek. Listen via the master playlist file or the Soundcloud feed. This song is very adjacent to the Chronotype theme and may end up on volume 4, but we'll see. In the meantime, enjoy!
Sho! the latest Animex joint is a Gundam groove called "Anxiety Show". It's in the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. Anxiety Show is the second song I've completed using BGM from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) as the source material. The borrowed bassline is one of my favorite from the series, and, of course, that amazing shout from the mid-episode "eyecatch". Enjoy!
Animex Volume 4 is in the works. My newest song, "Mazone Memory", has been added to the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. Mazone Memory is the third song I've completed using as source material the sumptuous BGM of Space Pirate Captain Harlock. The song starts out as a bit of a remix and evolves into two further forms. I took some additional inspiration from the phased elements of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". Enjoy!
This new song isn't a Chronotype or an Animex though it is sample-based. "Like Witches" has been added to the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. Like Witches is inspired by the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows from 1966. I'm currently on Season 10 of 24, so pretty hooked.
The last song on Chronotype volume 3 has been released, and with that, the EP is officially complete! "Chiaro" has been added to the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. Chiaro is a melancholy piece about being alone and saying goodbye, featuring lots of cellos. Enjoy!
A new Chronotype song has been added to the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. This is the 5th track destined for Chronotype volume 3. These Emptied Hands is a catchy but unsettling piece that features heavy use of vocal samples. It's another pleasantly unique addition to the Chronotype musicography. Enjoy!
Two new songs have been added to the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. That's a total of four since Volume 2 was released in January. I surprise myself. The Expanse is a rocking wall of apocalyptic sound, continuing a tend that runs though "The Reach" and "Shy Bats for Tomorrow". Apolitical Intellectuals is a slower, plodding, whirling dirge of piano and humorous despondency. I am pleased with the way Chronotype Volume 3 is shaping up.
As volume 2 of the Chronotype series was released, I was relieved to find myself immediately back in create mode. Two new songs have been added to the master playlist file and the Soundcloud feed. The Reach is a noisy blues-type song featuring lots of trombones. The Witkin Stomp is a kind of dub track featuring the flute. I'm currently finishing up a piano dirge, which will be out very soon. Chronotype volume 03 is off to a surprising start!
Volume two of the Chronotype series is done. I'll have the full details soon, but the completed EP is now in the master playlist file . Listen on Soundcloud here:
R.O.B.B.I.E.:The second Chronotype collection is taking shape and will be ready in early 2024. In the meantime, here's a new track marked for inclusion, "R.O.B.B.I.E.". This track has a steady beat and noisy, bouncy riffs. It utilizes source material from J.D. Robb's 1970 composition "Green Mansions (Abel & Rima)" and some vocal bits from Columbia's 1968 promotional record "M.O.O.T.". I hope you enjoy it!

ANIMEX 03 is in the wind!
7 tracks; 27 minutes.
What you get:
- An uplifing dirge of triumph.
- A sanguine ride-out theme.
- A disorienting banger.
- A soothing sonic vista.
- An aerial battle theme.
- A victorious repose.
- An exercise in self-defense.
Animex 03 - 01 - The Golden Sedan
Animex 03 - 02 - Suit Up Sortie
Animex 03 - 03 - Mellowarp
Animex 03 - 04 - Stellarcadia
Animex 03 - 05 - Side Rivals
Animex 03 - 06 - Cypress-Nanbarra
Animex 03 - 07 - Debiru Kick!
Volume 3 of the Animex series is on the home stretch. The EP will have seven tracks, four of which have already been released over the past few months. The last three tracks are in their final stages of completion. In the meantime, you can hear Side Rivals, Mellowarp, Debiru Kick, and The Golden Sedan
(either here or on Soundcloud). Animex 03 will most certainly be released in 2023 if not this month.
Debiru Kick: Happy Halloween! The track evolves and improvises as trumpets tumble through planes of existence. The source material is a BGM piece from the 1972 anime Devilman. I hope you enjoy!
Mellowarp: The sample source is a passage of BGM from the 1974 anime Space Battleship Yamato. The tempo remains, but the audio is rearranged. The source motif is present along with new ideas and perspectives. A Mellotron drifts in and out of the piece to nudge the captain's wheel stern or starboard when needed. I imagine this spaceship is about to engage its hyperdrive, but the controls are broken, so a Mellotron is installed as an interface. Now the destination coordinates must be played. There's more background to this song, but that's for another time.
Cosmic Rust: I was inspired after absorbing a couple of sessions of Breakfast with Ringoo with MNDSGN. The layered jazz loops felt so warm and embracing and sedate. That's Chronotype territory. Here we have a sort of chopped and screwed up jazz fusion. The sample source is the 1972 song After the Cosmic Rain by Return to Forever, a song that has significance to me.
My previous estimate-to-completion of a new track was off by a month, but the deliverables have doubled. I'm about to release two new tracks! One of each, Animex and Chronotype, are just pending titles and art. The pairs of songs thing always happens without me planning it, and I think I know the reason. I don't like a lot of multitasking, but one project doesn't provide enough variety of experience. Two works a lot better, especially if they're sort of complementary ideas, like fast and slow, loud and soft, etc. Three at once will just turn into two at once by unconscious elimination. I think I just now named this the 2-Song Method.
Tracks drop any day now. Stay tuned!
I've been working on a new Animex track based on a BGM passage called "Warp" from Space Battleship Yamato. The track is inspired by the sights in my neighborhood, and how you can turn a corner and suddenly feel transported to the unfamiliar. I hope to finish is up by the end of the month.
In the meantime, 4 new songs have been released over the summer so far. They (and the rest) are free to come get:
"Side Rivals" is an upbeat track that samples a BGM passage from Mobile Suit Gundam, called "Spy On Enemy Territory". It will be included on the next Animex collection.
"Pioneer 10" is a heavier track that samples "String Quartet No. 2" by George Rochberg. It will be on the next Chronotype collection. Pioneer 10 space probe was launched in 1972 and left the solar system in 1983 on a one-way trip into the unknown.
"The Golden Sedan" is a down-tempo procession that samples a bridge from the BGM of Space Pirate Captain Harlock.
"Fancy Bred" is mid-tempo and airy. The song uses a sample from Elliot Carter's "Tell Me Where Is Fancy Bred". Carter's title and lyrics come from a Shakespeare passage, like sampling.

My creations are mainly sample-based with beats. My two main projects are Animex, Chronotype. Anything else I create is in the miscellaneous bucket of Malodious Minuets. Ultimately, these labels are a superficial distinction.
The Animex collections are music inspired by vintage anime, using their soundtracks and background music (AKA "BGM"), as source material.
The Chronotype collections are music of the same process as Animex, but the source material is my personal library of high-brow 20th century classical/avant garde/early electronic records.
(Here's the master playlist [m3u] of everything, if your setup supports it.)

Miscellaneous Malodious Minuets
Malodious Minuets are songs that fall outside projects Animex and Chronotype. I've got two, so far.
The first one is a no-samples track called "Tricks or Treats".
Tricks or Treats
The second called "Like Witches", which samples the BGM from the 1966 soap opera Dark Shadows. A few Chrontypes have been made from orchestral soundtracks, this might end up on Chrono 04.
